Love, Mazria Announced as ArchEx Keynote Speakers

AIA Virginia is pleased to announce the first round of keynote speakers for Architecture Exchange East (ArchEx) 2020. On Wednesday, Nov. 4, ArchEx is bringing together internationally recognized leaders in the profession’s efforts to combat the climate crisis  — Andrea Love and Ed Mazria.

Edward Mazria, FAIA
Founder and CEO, Architecture 2030

Edward Mazria is an internationally recognized architect, author, researcher, and educator. His seminal research into urbanization, climate change, sustainability, energy consumption, solar energy, and greenhouse gas emissions in the built environment has redefined the role of architecture, planning, design, and building, in reshaping our world. He is the founder and CEO of Architecture 2030, a think tank developing real-world solutions for 21st century problems, and host of the AIA+2030 Professional Education Series, China Accord, the 2030 Districts movement in North American cities, the Zero Tool and Achieving Zero – a framework of incremental building sector actions to ensure a carbon neutral built environment by the year 2050.

This past year, he delivered the Roadmap to Zero Emissions to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) – a flexible approach to achieve zero CO2 emissions in the built environment by mid-century. He also issued the 2050 Imperative – a commitment to plan and design to carbon neutral standards – which has been adopted by the International Union of Architects and all regional professional organizations (representing over 1.3 million architects) in 124 countries worldwide.

Payette – 2019 AIA Architecture Firm of the Year

Andrea Love’s groundbreaking work is helping to define the emerging role of a building scientist. At Payette, she works across projects to bring rigor and state-of-the art analytic tools to minimize the impacts of buildings on the environment. The winner of the 2017 AIA Young Architects Award, Love has helped to nurture a culture of sustainable practices that are now deeply embedded in the firm’s design philosophies.

She leads a number of research projects, and was the Principal Investigator on the 2012 AIA Upjohn Research Initiative-funded “Thermal Performance of Facades.” She also leads the firm’s efforts on the AIA 2030 Commitment, tracking and benchmarking the performance of projects across the firm.

Delivered virtually through AIA Virginia’s Foresight 2020 event platform, ArchEx takes place during the first week of November. Registration opens in late August. Stay tuned for additional announcements.

Architecture Exchange East. It’s our reunion, research lab, Academy Awards, election day, and graduation ceremony, all rolled into one annual, three-day event.

So, what’s it going to look like this year? To be honest, we’re not exactly sure — but we do know it will be pretty different from anything we’ve done in the past. Like everyone else, we’re learning new technologies and exploring innovative ways of doing business. We’re imagining all the possibilities. And, right now we’d love to hear from you.

Our theme, suggested by a brilliant (and possibly psychic) board member last October, is Foresight 2020. What topics and trends will be critical in the next 5, 10, 20 years? Let us know who you want to hear from and what research and innovations you need to know about.

With crisis, comes opportunity. Growth. Change is inevitable — let’s prepare to design the future instead of catching up to it.

Breakthroughs in technologies, research, and thinking are dramatically transforming the AEC industry at an unprecedented pace. For 3 days this November, come together to envision what the future holds for the profession at Architecture Exchange East: Foresight 2020.

Identify critical changes designers must make to address the climate crisis and learn how to effectively advocate for systemic change. Our call for presentation proposals will launch in late March, but you don’t need to be a speaker to help shape ArchEx. Simply let us know what you want to discover.

Is there a topic you’ve been wanting to explore or experts you want to hear from that align with our theme of Foresight 2020? Maybe you have a panel discussion idea that has been percolating in your head for a while. Or a project you’ve always want to tour. Or a workshop concept that just needs to become a reality.

The idea can be rough around the edges, but we’re looking for something a bit more refined than “sessions for emerging professionals” or “historic preservation.” (Don’t get us wrong. We’ll definitely be curating content on those topics.)

yafCON 2019 Announces Speakers

yafCON is pleased to announce the panelists for the 2019 micro-conference at Architecture Exchange East. This year’s theme is The Architect of the New Era: critical issues of the 21st century designer. The program is free with your ArchEx registration or you can simply register to attend the [yaf]CON micro-conference on Friday, Nov. 8 from 1:30-5 p.m.

807: Tour: Ancient Space Planning Principles in Residential Design
4525 and 4529 Springfield Rd. homes are based on the ancient Vedic principles of space planning. The design is minimalist and functional in nature and is devoid of futile bells and whistles normally found on builder homes that serve to impress neighbors rather than enrich the lives of the homeowners. The homes are designed keeping in mind a busy young family and features 3300 sq. ft. of usable space. These homes are an architect’s answer to the builder and realtor driven cookie cutter housing market.

808: Tour: Converting a Barn into a Home
Built in 1977, the barn is not technically historic but having been built by the Cochrane family who founded Overnite Trucking and were incredibly generous to Hanover County, it is considered an important part of the county’s history. When the current owners saw the stately hay barn with a “for-sale” sign they knew they would save it by making it their home. Their design goals were clear; on the exterior there was to be minimal changes to respect the original Dutch gambrel design. On the interior it was important to express the impressive two story volume of the barn, to keep the existing structural elements and to re-use and re-purpose any materials removed.
