Architect / Project Manager

The City of Virginia Beach is hiring an Architect / Project Manager to support the planning, design, and delivery of the City’s capital improvement projects. This role ensures compliance with City standards through technical review, coordination with internal and external partners, and resolution of complex design challenges. The Architect supports budgeting, staff guidance, and public communication to keep projects on schedule and aligned with City goals.
- Provide comprehensive architectural support in all areas of architecture for the development of capital projects such as those in the City’s six-year capital improvement program, including cost estimates, and related items for the City to budget for its capital improvement projects
- Review design and inspection activities on complex projects; provide training and assistance to professional staff in preparation or review of design drawings
- Investigate and resolve difficult technical development and operational problems
- May assist in the planning, direction and management of a major operational bureau
- Coordinate projects with several interdepartmental agencies and the private sector to meet project goals; and provide recommendations as staff input for Planning Commission and City Council actions to assure that special needs of the City are met
- Provide technical responses to citizen inquiries to properly inform them as well as incorporate their input
The ideal candidate is a licensed Architect with strong experience in project management, construction and design, and municipal capital projects. They bring proven expertise in schedule and cost control, contract administration, and coordinating with multiple stakeholders to deliver projects on time and within budget.
