A Path to Leadership

A Path to Leadership

Do you ever wonder, “What is the next step?” or “What can I do to be more involved in the industry I serve?”

In partnership with AIA, your state component has responded to these questions by adding additional support as well including a new resource called “A Path to Leadership.” We hope this document helps emerging professionals see the journey from joining as an AIA associate member clear through to fellowship.

If you have any questions about this new resource, please contact Shanelle Calvin, Membership Manager at scalvin@aiava.org or (804) 237-1772.

Charles and Ripple Honored As Emerging Professionals

Christopher Charles, Assoc. AIA, Associate at Hanbury Evans Wright Vlattas + Company and Jeana Ripple, AIA, Founding Principal of Ripple Architecture Studio and Assistant Professor at the University of Virginia School of Architecture, will be recognized with The Virginia Emerging Professional Award at the Visions for Architecture gala on Friday, Nov. 6, 2015, at the Science Museum of Virginia. The Virginia Emerging Professional Award is intended to recognize the accomplishments of emerging leaders in Virginia for their contributions to the profession in one or more of the following categories: design, research, education, or discourse; service to the profession; mentorship; or service to the community.

Christopher, who earned his Bachelor of Architecture at Hampton University, combines his exceptional leadership and engagement skills to collaborate with his clients, peers, and students whether it be in advancing the profession, mentoring, lecturing or teaching at his alma mater, or in service to his community.

“One of the many admirable characteristics Chris possesses is his commitment to gaining a wide variety of work experiences, in project types and scale, as well as each of the phases of design, bidding and construction. Chris recognized early he needs to fully comprehend the many facets of architecture in order to be a competent designer and well-rounded architect. This level of maturity for someone in Chris’ position is exemplary,” stated William Hopkins, Principal and Operations Director at Hanbury Evans Wright Vlattas + Company.

Jeana, who earned her bachelor’s degree in Computer Science at the University of Notre Dame College of Engineering and her Master of Architecture at the University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning, has balanced research and practice during her first decade of professional work. Jeana draws on this background to combine computational and material technology, seeking critical efficiencies in social, ecological and economic systems.

William H. Sherman, Professor of Architecture and Associate Vice President for Research at the University of Virginia said, “I recognize the importance of Jeana’s combination of deep domain knowledge, her capacity to collaborate with colleagues in other disciplines and her willingness and success at bringing her research into her practice and her classroom. These are the hallmarks of the best of a new generation of architects that will transform the disciplines and practices beyond the academy.”

For their accomplishments as emerging leaders in Virginia and for their contributions to the profession, AIA Virginia presents Christopher Charles and Jeana Ripple with the Virginia Emerging Professional Award.

Is the 2030 Challenge Feasible?

As the 2030 Challenge deadline approaches, people are beginning to question if global carbon-neutrality is a feasible reality. But some think the question should not be whether we can build one carbon-neutral building, as many individual buildings have reached this goal, but rather whether we can build a carbon-neutral community.

A group of regional emerging professionals has developed a survey [adrotate banner=”53″]  aimed to uncover gaps in knowledge and practice around sustainable design techniques pertaining to the built environment. It has been developed as a launching point to begin a discussion about what may or may not be holding us back from carbon-neutrality. The survey will take 10-15 minutes to complete, and will contribute to a base of knowledge for further research studies. You are encouraged to fill out the survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/BCDQQZY.

The AIA Board of Directors Class of 2013 chose as its name The Original 13 based on Richard Upjohn and the 13 Architects who founded the AIA in 1857. They took their class name from the tradition of the past but are looking to the future.

They want to meet Emerging Leaders at the AIA Convention this June in Denver, and are offering five fellowships in the amount of $1,000 each to attend the Convention, expand career horizons and look to the future.

HOW IT WORKS

Send a Tweet of Interest to share what you hope to learn by attending the Convention as an Emerging Leader. The Class will review your Tweets and select ten finalists. These finalists will write a more detailed narrative of their aspirations. Five Fellowship Recipients will be selected from this group on the basis of their narratives.

Each Fellowship Recipient will be paired with two Class of 2013 Board Directors during the Convention and will receive a $1,000 stipend to offset expenses. They’ll help each Fellowship Recipient realize his/her aspirations at Convention; get to know them personally with the hope of forming enduring relationships. After Convention they’ll ask for a report on the experience to share with other Emerging Leaders.

Career Compass Launches

The kickoff meeting of VSAIA’s Career Compass program was held on Sept. 27, 2012, at the Virginia Center for Architecture.  Career Compass is the initial effort of VSAIA’s new Emerging Professionals Knowledge Community, begun in 2012 and supported in part by a Component Grant from Victor O. Schinnerer and Co., the CNA Insurance Companies, and the AIA Trust.  Philip Donovan, AIA, along with a steering group and staff support, is leading the effort.

Career Compass pairs experienced architects with emerging professionals in a mentoring relationship.  The intent of the program is for mentors and protégés to meet several times informally in the coming months, and several more times in formal meeting sessions, for information sharing and learning activities oriented toward supporting the relationship and continuing professional growth of the participants.  Seven pairs of mentors and protégés have been recruited for this initial year, with more planned for the future.

The kickoff meeting combined “getting to know you” activities with an introduction to the program and discussion of the Myers-Briggs typology.  The Career Compass group meets every other month in Richmond for the next six months.  For information abut the program contact Philip Donovan at Donovan@vmdo.com or Wayne Conners at wconners@aiava.org.
