Motions Made and Approved:
The Board of Directors of AIA Virginia voted as follows:
- Approval of the June 21, 2019, Meeting Minutes
- Approval of Proposed 2019 AIA Virginia Honors Awards
- Approval of the Proposed Amendment to the Rules of the Organization
- Approval of Endorsement of Bruce Brooks, AIA for Service Continuation on NFPA Committees
- Approval of AIA Virginia PAC Bylaws Changes
- Approval of 2020 AIA Virginia Membership Dues Rates
- Approval of Proposed Slate for 2020 Officers and Associate Director

AGENDA ITEMS BASED ON STRATEGIC PLAN GOALS:
- Position Architects as vital contributors to our built environment.
- A motion was presented by the Honors Committee recommending approval of the presented 2019 AIA Virginia Honors Awards. The motion passed unanimously.
- A motion was presented by the Honors Committee recommending the addition of Article 4.7.11 of the Rules of the Organization. The motion passed unanimously.
- A motion was presented by the Government Advocacy Advisory Council recommending the endorsement of Bruce Brooks, AIA for continuing service to the National Fire Protection Association as a representative of the AIA. The motion passed unanimously.
- Advocate for the profession.
- A motion was presented by the Political Action Committee Board of Trustees recommending approval of the presented revisions to the AIA Virginia PAC Bylaws. The motion passed unanimously.
- A discussion was held regarding allocating 100% of the 2020 AIA Virginia membership dues increase to the PAC and determination of the increased amount. A motion was presented and passed with one vote in opposition and one abstention.
- The Board of Directors emphasized the importance of collaborating with local components and utilizing various communication channels for disseminating information related to the PAC Opt-In initiative.
DISCUSSION ITEMS:
Treasurer’s Report:
The organization’s Balance Sheet was presented which indicates the cash and cash equivalents are approximately $125k greater than at this point last year. It was noted that revenue associated with Architecture Exchange East is lower than at this time last year.
Nominating Committee Report:
A motion was presented by the Nominating Committee recommending approval of the 2020 Slate of Nominees for presentation to the membership for action at the Annual Meeting. The motion passed unanimously.
New Business:
- Oral History of Architecture: The Board requests that Emeritus members, Past Presidents of local components, Emerging Leaders in Architecture alumni, university representatives from local boards, and the John Braymer Leadership Circle be approached as interview candidates. The word “intern” should be removed from the description document.
- Virtual Membership Meeting Survey: Based on the survey results, it was determined that a mid-year Virtual Membership Meeting is not needed. The Board decided that a “Year in Review” and “Mid-Year Status” document should be distributed to the membership electronically.
- Blueprint for Better Communities Dinner: The first dinner will occur in Richmond on September 10 at the home of Burt Pinnock, FAIA.
- VAGP Conference: AIA Virginia and ACEC Virginia co-sponsored a portion of the Virginia Association of Government Purchasers fall symposium being held on September 29 – October 1 in Lynchburg. As part of the sponsorship, Matt Gough of Ames & Gough and Jonathan Shoemaker of Lee Shoemaker will present a seminar to procurement professionals on uninsurable language in design service contracts.
- Chartwell Capital MOU Suspension – The Memorandum of Understanding has been suspended indefinitely.
- Amber Book Discussion: The Board supports using the Amber Book as an Architect Registration Exam (ARE) preparatory product. The product will be a member benefit in the form of an exam preparation scholarship. The Executive Vice President will initiate a funding request for the amount of the product to the Virginia Foundation for Architecture.
- A Healing Day ceremony will occur on August 25 at Fort Monroe.
The next meeting of the 2019 AIA Virginia Board of Directors will take place Friday, October 11, 2019, at Virginia Tech’s Washington-Alexandria Architecture Center.
