Balance in Motion: The Evolution of Cycling in America

The Branch Museum of Architecture and Design joins the metro-Richmond region in welcoming the world’s top cyclists and an estimated 450,000 spectators to the 2015 UCI Road World Championships. In celebration of this unprecedented event, we’re highlighting our expanded mission to reveal the inherent beauty of the created form through an exploration of the bicycle as a designed object.

Balance in Motion: The Evolution of Cycling in America
July 30–Oct. 18, 2015

In various forms, the bicycle existed long before the founding of the United States, yet the impact of American ingenuity on bicycle evolution can be readily seen. Bicycles have provided a means of making a living, breaking away from the assigned social roles, and even a forum for improving upon existing mechanics.

There are few machines that have touched the lives of so many as the bicycle, and yet it is often still aligned with a child’s play thing. Through this exhibition — made up of broad stroke evolutionary steps and poignant detailed descriptions — discover the bicycle for all its accomplishments, contributions, contributors, and potential.
