Lessons Learned from Virginia’s August 23rd Earthquake

The earthquake that occurred August 23, 2011, centered in Louisa County,  was an event of historic proportions.   VSAIA is partnering with Draper Aden Associates and the Virginia Center for Architecture to offer a lunch session on the architectural impact of the 5.8 magnitude quake.

David W. Spriggs, P.E., of Draper Aden Associates, will examine the earthquake in the context of historical comparison, review the extent of the damage, and discuss how well building codes provided for the event, and how they didn’t measure up.

Questions answered will include:

  • What are the types of building details that are vulnerable?
  • Which building details worked well?
  • Which construction industry procedures helped minimize seismic damage?

This will be a free lunchtime seminar held at the Virginia Center for Architecture.  1 AIA/CES Learning Unit (HSW) will be provided.

Bring your own lunch.  Some beverages will be provided.
