Award for Distinguished Achievement: Shawn Mulligan, AIA, for Building Leaders and Strengthening the Business of Architecture
AIA Virginia’s Award for Distinguished Achievement recognizes exceptional accomplishment across professional practice, education, citizen-architect service, service to the profession, and related areas of influence. Shawn Mulligan, AIA, has earned that recognition by repeatedly identifying gaps in the profession and building durable programs to fill them—especially for architects navigating the pivotal middle stages of their careers.
Mulligan’s service has grown from local leadership with AIA Central Virginia to statewide and national influence. Along the way, he has built programs for emerging professionals, created peer networks for mid-career architects, led pro bono design initiatives, strengthened nonprofit governance, served on the AIA Virginia Board, and become Virginia’s representative to the AIA Strategic Council.
At the center of that record is the AIA Virginia Leaders in Architecture and Business program, or LAB, a statewide nine-month initiative that equips mid-career architects with tools in leadership, people management, finance, time, and firm operations.
The program’s impact is particularly compelling because it occurs at a critical time in the professional lives of its participants. One participant writes that Mulligan’s encouragement persuaded her when she was questioning her own value as a designer and firm owner: “He saw the potential for growth in me before I could see it in myself.” Other LAB alumni have described the experience simply as “transformative for my career.”
That emphasis on helping others advance is at the core of Mulligan’s service. Kelly Callahan, AIA, describes him as being led by the conviction that “we elevate each other through community,” noting his ability to create systems that continue supporting people after his direct involvement ends. Mulligan’s influence has grown from local to statewide and now national significance, with LAB attracting attention as a model for other AIA components.
In honoring Shawn Mulligan, AIA Virginia recognizes not only the programs he has created, but also the continuing legacy of the architects whose confidence, leadership, practices, and communities are stronger because those programs exist.
