Award for Distinguished Achievement: Jeremy Maloney, AIA, for Altruistic Design and Civic Transformation
The Award for Distinguished Achievement recognizes a singular accomplishment or a career of distinction across areas including design, practice, education, citizen-architect service, service to the profession, and efforts advancing social equity. For Jeremy Maloney, AIA, professional practice and public service are deliberately inseparable. He is an architect who has made generosity a model of practice—and used that model to help reshape the cultural and civic life of Virginia Beach.
Maloney’s approach was formed in part during graduate school at Tulane University, where his work in post-Katrina New Orleans expanded his understanding of architecture as an act of public service. In Virginia Beach, that philosophy ultimately found expression in Altruistic Design, the firm he founded in 2017. The practice has supported more than forty small businesses and nonprofits and contributed thousands of hours of service, with a particularly visible impact in and around the ViBe Creative District.
His civic contribution has grown alongside the district itself. The ViBe Creative District has attracted more than sixty-five small businesses, generating significant growth in sales and tax revenues since its founding. Maloney continues to be an important contributor to that place-based transformation.
His work has ranged from pro bono and reduced-cost assistance for entrepreneurs to public art initiatives, service on city commissions and design-review bodies, leadership with the Old Beach Farmers Market, and support for educational and nonprofit organizations. A Virginia Beach council member describes him as a “steadfast champion” for high-quality design and long-term community interests.
Maloney states his philosophy succinctly: “Architects must be present in their communities and give back wherever they can.” One supporter goes even further, writing that “‘Altruistic’ is the term that defines Jeremy Maloney” and reflects his concern, commitment, character, and practice. The Award for Distinguished Achievement celebrates impact beyond ordinary professional expectations. Maloney’s record shows how one architect can multiply that impact by placing the resources of practice—design skill, advocacy, relationships, and problem-solving—in the service of an entire community.
