SUMMARY:Embodied Carbon 101: Process + Firm Culture
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to integrate sustainability work into your firm’s standard practices and procedures. \nIn order to make true progress toward carbon reduction\, carbon-thoughtful design must be part of the AEC industry’s standards and culture\, instead of approached on a project-by-project basis. Hear from sustainability leaders representing a range of practices\, including architecture\, engineering and consulting\, construction\, and design/build firms who share the vision and infrastructure of their own firms’ sustainability and embodied carbon practice\, and elaborate on how they arrived at a place where sustainable design and construction is built into their firms’ cultures. These leaders identify barriers to adopting carbon-thoughtful design and strategies for breaking down those barriers\, including leveraging existing cultural and industry structures (for example: the AIA 2030 Commitment) and strengthening the connections between the existing values of firm leadership (for example: operational energy reduction; for example: materials and occupant health) and carbon reduction. \nPresented by Virginia COTE with support from AIA Virginia’s Knowledge Community Grant program and the following sponsors: \nGOLD\nKingspan Insulated Panels \nSILVER\nMafi \nBRONZE\nBamforth Engineers + Surveyors \nEarn 1.5 AIA LU|HSW \nRegister online.

SUMMARY:Embodied Carbon and Adaptive Use
DESCRIPTION:In a continuation of COTE’s Embodied Carbon 101 series\, Virginia’s Historic Resources Committee presents “Embodied Carbon and Adaptive Use.” \nExisting buildings represent significant investments in energy and resources\, so it stands to reason that one of the best ways of reducing embodied carbon is to adapt and reuse them. Discover strategies for maximizing the potential of the already embodied carbon in existing building stock. \nEarn 1.0 AIA LU|HSW \nRegister online.

SUMMARY:ARE® Prep Session
DESCRIPTION:Whether you’re studying for several divisions of the ARE® exam or are an established architect\, this seminar will review the basic concepts of statics and the mechanics of materials\, along with a selection of appropriate structural systems for different design criteria. Presented as a set of criterion and in-process construction photos\, the seminar will include general discussions of axial\, perpendicular and eccentric loading. Additionally\, focus will be on the lateral stability of building structures\, including discussion and presentation of concepts such as Moment Resisting Frames\, Braced Frames\, Diaphragms and Shear Walls. A survey of foundations and retaining walls\, along with an overview of wind and seismic forces\, will also be covered in this session presented by Prof. David Thaddeus. \n  \nHere is the link to more info and registration: https://aianova.org/event.php?eventID=2489 \n  \n

SUMMARY:Implementing the Guides for Equitable Practice
DESCRIPTION:The AIA Guides for Equitable Practice make the moral\, business\, ethical\, and societal cases for equitable practice in the profession of architecture. They provide key insights to hear insights on how the guides can change firm culture and create an environment that nurtures retention and inspires limitless thinking. In this course\, participants will discover recommendations on how to achieve goals found within the Guides through utilization in practice and as a resource in connecting these goals with the work of their firm/organization. \n1 LU | Elective\nFree \nRegister Online>> \nDownload the Guides for Equitable Practice \nLearning objectives \n\n\n\n\n\nExplain why goals and motivations play an important role in equity\, diversity\, and inclusion work.\nCompare and contrast equity as an input with diversity as an output\nUtilize the AIA Guides as a resource by using a variety of strategies to engage the material\nNavigate through multiple AIA Guides to better understand a single complex issue\nConnect the work of their firm with goals or prompts in the Guides\n\nThe presenter \n\n\n\nRenée Cheng\, FAIA \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRenée Cheng was named dean of the College of Built Environments in January 2019. Previously\, Cheng served as head of the School of Architecture at the University of Minnesota. \nCheng is a leader in the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and advocates for equity in the field of architecture and in the practices related to the built environment. Recently\, Cheng led the research effort for the AIA Guides for Equitable Practice. \nKnown for her pedagogical skill in designing classes and programs that empower students and integrate practice with academia\, Cheng has twice won the AIA Practice Leadership Award. She has been named one of the top 25 most admired design educators in the U.S. by DesignIntelligence and an Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture Distinguished Professor and was elevated to the AIA College of Fellows. \nA licensed architect\, her professional experience includes work for Pei\, Cobb\, Freed and Partners and Richard Meier and Partners before founding Cheng-Olson Design.

SUMMARY:High Performing Resilient Wood Framed Roofs
DESCRIPTION:This course provides an overview and discussion of resilient construction methods related to roof construction. We start by defining resiliency as a design objective\, then investigate the financial ramifications of natural disasters on structures not designed with resiliency in mind. We describe numerous programs that promote resilient construction in the US\, including a program designed to provide insurance discounts to homeowners that build to resilient standards. Finally\, the program describes the construction techniques that qualify as resilient practices and provides a financial comparison of the costs of these practices. \nAs a result of participating in this presentation\, attendees will be equipped to: \n\nIdentify and recognize the natural environmental forces that affect the design considerations of wood-framed roof systems.\nAssess the advantages and disadvantages of resilient vs. non-resilient design.\nCompare and contrast the performance characteristics of the components of a wood-framed roof system.\nProvide best practice solutions for resilient design of wood-framed roofs.\n\nEarn 1.0 AIA LU | HSW \nRegister online. \nPresented in collaboration with Huber Engineered Woods.
