SUMMARY:Climate Change\, Inequality\, and Sustainability in Richmond
DESCRIPTION:During the 20th century\, local and federal officials reinforced racial segregation through a number of policies and practices in Richmond. Though these are no longer legal\, the implications of these actions were profound: Neighborhoods once deemed hazardous because of their racial makeup are still predominantly black and brown and are areas of higher poverty. They are also the neighborhoods most vulnerable to climate change\, affected by higher temperatures and flooding more acutely than wealthier\, whiter parts of the city. Panelists in this webinar will examine the relationships between 20th-century urban policy\, racial inequality\, and climate change in Richmond\, and what we can do about it now. \nPanelists: \nDr. Jeremy Hoffman\, Chief Scientist\, Science Museum of Virginia \nKendra Norrell\, Community Engagement Coordinator\, City of Richmond Office of Sustainability \nRegister: https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/4770654 \nThis webinar is eligible for 1.0 AIA Learning Unit and HSW Credit for attending. Please follow the questions upon registration. You will only get credit for attending the LIVE webinar. \nNote: This event will be conducted online via Zoom. Registrants will participate on their computer\, iPad\, or smartphone device. \n*This lecture will be recorded.\n**After registration\, please check for a confirmation email from Brown Paper Tickets in your Junk/Spam folder. This email includes information to join the webinar.\n***Registration closes the date of the webinar at 5:30 PM

SUMMARY:The Restoration Dialogue: Solving the Unknowns of Preservation and Restoration The Branch House Pipes
DESCRIPTION:The Branch House plumbing is remarkable in that so much of the original piping is still in use after 100 years but it is causing damage to the decorative plaster. \nTracing the pipes has led to understanding how the house was built behind the surfaces you see.  You will see various strategies in investigating behind the walls\, spaces not normally seen by the public including the highest and lowest parts of the building\, and some of the 1916 construction drawings from Pope’s office.  You will learn about construction techniques that were novel in 1919 but are common today and things to consider when describing work to be done that you cannot see. Like a simple plumbing job today\, what started as a seemingly mundane task escalated into a historical reimagining of the entire building and discovery of what was else needs to be done! \nPanelists: \nWalter M. Dotts III\, Trustee – Old House Authority\, and great-grandson of John Kerr Branch and Beulah Gould Branch \nCalder Loth\, Architectural Historian \nRegister: https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/4786486 \nThis webinar is eligible for 1.0 AIA Learning Unit for attending. SUMMARY:The Branch House Roof\, Trim and Windows
DESCRIPTION:The roof and windows are defining features of the Branch House.  The diamond-patterned windows enhance the medieval character of the building\, the exterior woodwork relied on skilled craftsmen to make adjustments on-site like medieval carpenters\, and the roof system is a series of pitches with slate and flat surfaces now with modern coatings.  But these features are more than beautiful; they have to keep water out and their wear is showing. Our panel of experts will discuss the challenges of repairing building elements that pose the greatest risk to water infiltration that can either be highly visible or obscured. \nRegister: https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/4775098 \nA link to this webinar will be sent to all registrants the day before the event. \nPanelists: \nFred Esenwein\, Ph.D.\, Glavé & Holmes\, Moderator \nScott Taylor\, ES Taylor Studio \nSam Daniel\, Daniel & Co. \nWalter M. DESCRIPTION:Commercial Property Assessed Clean Energy (C-PACE) provides affordable\, long-term financing to commercial property owners to pay for energy efficiency\, water efficiency\, and onsite renewable energy upgrades. Commercial property owners receive funding for energy savings upgrades and make repayments through their property tax bill. Ideal for private sector projects\, C-PACE can be used for new construction\, retrofits\, and resiliency efforts. As an additional advantage\, soft costs like A/E fees are included. \nDuring the 2020 General Assembly\, legislation was passed for the Commonwealth to create a statewide C-PACE program run through the Department of Mines\, Minerals\, and Energy (DMME). Virginia DMME is now in partnership with the District of Columbia Department of Energy and Environment (DOEE) and the Maryland Clean Energy Center (MCEC) to form the Mid-Atlantic PACE Alliance. As architects play a key role in C-PACE projects\, we are proud to have DMME partner with AIA Virginia its outreach efforts. \nThe seminar will cover the following key elements: \n\nWhat is Commercial Property Assessed Clean Energy (C-PACE) Financing? (C-PACE is a tax assessment-based tool for building owners to finance clean energy- and water-related improvements to their properties. C-PACE assessments are typically collected by localities on property tax bills\, and repayment directed to the lenders by the locality. C-PACE financing is advantageous because it is secured by the property\, not the owner’s credit\, and is transferrable upon sale.)\nWhat are the eligible building types? (Generally privately-owned or non-profit; commercial\, hospitality\, industrial\, mixed-use or multifamily with 5 or more units\, agricultural; retrofit\, substantial renovation and new construction projects may utilize C-PACE)\nWhat measures and project costs are financeable through C-PACE programs? Typical energy and water conservation measures\, as well as solar PV\, EV charging  The C-PACE value proposition is that utility savings and long term financing (up to 20-25 years) will allow owners to mostly if not entirely offset the loan payments with the utility bill savings.  If a renewable energy system is installed\, this will reduce utility cost by crediting the electricity production from the system to the owner’s bill. Virginia’s code also allows for resilience\, flood prevention/storm water management\, and living shoreline improvements to be financed.\nHow can C-PACE combine with other incentives and financing (utility DSM programs\, traditional bank loans\, private equity) or programs (Opportunity Zones\, Main Street\, etc.)? C-PACE can be integrated with all available financing/capital sources for the project; it may also be a source of financing for organizations that may typically have difficulty in obtaining financing.\nProvide examples (case studies) of successful projects (we have several from Maryland and DC)\nHow can C-PACE assist building owners with indoor air and environmental quality issues including those associated with COVID-19? IAQ measures such as UV-C lighting systems are generally financeable if installed along with other energy-saving HVAC system upgrades\nWhat is DMME’s role (as the Virginia State Energy Office) in supporting C-PACE program implementation and availability of C-PACE financing in the Commonwealth?\n\nDMME has worked with stakeholders and industry partners for several years to enable C-PACE financing and programs.  Implementing C-PACE at scale statewide is well-aligned with DMME’s mission to ensure a transition to a vibrant and equitable clean energy economy for Virginians. \nEarn 1 AIA LU \nPresented by Virginia PACE Authority. \nVirginia PACE Authority (VPA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that designs and administers C-PACE loan programs for Virginia communities. We offer a uniform\, cost-effective and highly innovative C-PACE program platform that fosters greater economic development activity and promotes the Commonwealth’s clean energy goals. As the program administrator\, VPA works with commercial businesses\, property owners\, contractors and local governments to facilitate the financing of energy efficiency\, renewable energy and resilient projects on both existing buildings and new developments. \n
