SUMMARY:18th UIFA Congress for Women in Architecture
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \nIn an unprecedented collaboration\, the International Archive of Women in Architecture (IAWA) at Virginia Tech will host the 18th Congress of the L’Union Internationale des Femmes Architectes to connect and build a network of women in architecture and design; and to collect\, preserve\, and highlight the professional contributions of women architects and designers\, growing the resources of the IAWA. \nThe theme of the 18th Congress is Contributing to the Constellation which aims to portray and elucidate the woman’s role and influence in architecture and other design related fields. This idea of a constellation advances the IAWA’s mission to preserve the works of women pioneers in architecture and design. As these trailblazing stars extinguish\, their work may be lost. Permanently. We save their work\, uncovering these materials to preserve them for future generations while also supporting the stars of today. #savethestars. \nLearn more here>> \nRegister online>>

SUMMARY:WoodWorks Richmond Seminars
DESCRIPTION:The Wood Revolution: Inspiring Architecture with Innovative Structural Systems\nArchitects in Europe commonly use “massive timber” design principles and techniques to take advantage of wood’s carbon benefits\, driving positive change through the power of wood design. However\, these techniques are not yet widely used in the U.S. Featuring case study examples of projects in Canada\, New Zealand and Europe\, this presentation will connect structure with architecture by introducing innovative structural wood products and systems and demonstrating their use in a range of applications. \nDesign Trends: Exceeding Cost and Performance Objectives with Wood-Frame Schools\nThe choice of building materials can have a considerable impact on a school’s construction costs\, energy efficiency\, acoustic performance\, aesthetic appeal and occupant environment\, which can in turn dramatically influence the success of students. This highly pictorial presentation will showcase the range of design possibilities and benefits associated with wood-frame schools. \nEducation\nCredits:          Attendees can earn 2.0 AIA/CES LUs (HSW) or PDH credits. \nThis seminar is intended for engineers\, architects\, builders and others with an interest in the design and construction of non-residential and multi-family wood buildings. SUMMARY:Design Forum XI: Dwelling: The Art of Living in the Century XXI
DESCRIPTION:Five exciting and renowned architects will gather in Charlottesville April 11-12\, 2014\, to put forth their own work as evidence that there is indeed a new set of principles that inspire the most-noticed architects in the world today. These are principles that foster aesthetic originality and client-centric problem-solving approaches; principles that address the challenges and opportunities that face every urban planner\, architect\, landscape architect\, and constructor currently in practice. How do you plan\, design\, and build today for the lifestyles\, technologies\, and natural and anthropogenic uncertainties of tomorrow? This current architectural “style of the present for the future” is contextual\, sensitive to the needs of all people\, and predicated on the co-existing goals of restoring both environmental and economic vitality. \nThe Friday evening Keynote Presentation by Terence Riley\, AIA\, former MoMA curator and co-founder of K/R architectural studio\, will kick off with a topic and speaker introduction by national AIA EVP/CEO Robert Ivy\, FAIA. \nThe program all day Saturday\, April 12\, includes presentations by Kai-Uwe Bergmann\, AIA\, principal\, BIG\, with offices in Copenhagen and New York City; Peter Gluck\, principal of the New York City design-build firm Gluck+; Jeff Kovel\, founder of Skylab\, Portland\, Ore.; and Ma Yansong\, founder of MAD architects.
