Facilities Management Services is directly responsible for all capital outlay construction within the Community College System. He and his staff support the 23 colleges with 40 campuses in all matters related to facilities and construction. He began his professional career in 1985 after graduation from the University of Tennessee with a Bachelor of Architecture\, working for the private architectural firm of Ben R. Johns\, Jr. Architect. From 1988 through 2006\, he worked for the Virginia Department of Corrections where he served as project manager\, Chief Architect\, and finally as Chief of Architectural & Engineering Services. From 2006 through 2012\, he served as the Director of Engineering and Building for the Virginia Department of General Services where he was the State Building Official and was responsible for the construction\, maintenance and operations of over 6.5 million square feet of buildings and parking facilities at the seat of government in Richmond\, Virginia. Bert is licensed to practice Architecture in Virginia and is an ICC Certified Building Official and is a Virginia Construction Contracting Officer. \nEd Gillikin\, AIA\, Architect for the Colleges and Deputy Chief Facilities Officer\nVirginia Community College System\, Commonwealth of Virginia \nEd Gilikin is the Architect for the Colleges and Deputy Chief Facilities Officer providing planning & design oversight and direction for all capital projects\, master plans\, and new campus development at Virginia’s 23 Community Colleges\, their 40 campuses\, and over 8.8 million square feet of space located across the Commonwealth. Ed is an architect with 25 years of experience\, a graduate of Virginia Tech\, and is Immediate Past President of the Virginia Society of the American Institute of Architects.  He has overseen over $700 million in capital construction projects while at both VCU and at the VCCS. Tour the house to learn about architecture\, preservation and life in the early 19th century. See ongoing excavation and view artifacts from the plantation community that lived and worked at Poplar Forest. Discover Jefferson’s vision for his gardens\, ornamental plantings and farm at Poplar Forest as it emerges through archaeology. This restoration journey\, of both house and landscape\, provides a place and an experience that allows us to feel anew what rekindled Thomas Jefferson’s own inspiration and spirit at the end of his life.
