SUMMARY:High Performing Resilient Wood Framed Roofs
DESCRIPTION:This course provides an overview and discussion of resilient construction methods related to roof construction. We start by defining resiliency as a design objective\, then investigate the financial ramifications of natural disasters on structures not designed with resiliency in mind. We describe numerous programs that promote resilient construction in the US\, including a program designed to provide insurance discounts to homeowners that build to resilient standards. Finally\, the program describes the construction techniques that qualify as resilient practices and provides a financial comparison of the costs of these practices. \nAs a result of participating in this presentation\, attendees will be equipped to: \n\nIdentify and recognize the natural environmental forces that affect the design considerations of wood-framed roof systems.\nAssess the advantages and disadvantages of resilient vs. non-resilient design.\nCompare and contrast the performance characteristics of the components of a wood-framed roof system.\nProvide best practice solutions for resilient design of wood-framed roofs.\n\nEarn 1.0 AIA LU | HSW \nRegister online. \nPresented in collaboration with Huber Engineered Woods.

SUMMARY:Cultivating A Path To Fellowship
DESCRIPTION:Cultivating Your Path to Fellowship\nReverse Engineering the FAIA Submission Process to Develop Meaning & Purpose in Practice \nFour\, 1-hour sessions starting Wednesday\, January 25th. \n4 AIA LU | Elective \nRegister>> \nToo often AIA members approach achieving Fellowship at the end of a significant phase of their career. The result is the demographic composition of the College of Fellows remains predominantly older\, white males. These sessions seek to elevate diversity in the College’s ranks by teaching young and mid-career architects to reverse engineer their path to Fellowship using the AIA’s Sample Application\, a specialized outline\, storytelling techniques\, and writing basics to define and amplify their voices and accomplishments. This method advances meaning and intention in attendees’ career paths and\, ultimately\, will bring younger and more diverse professionals to advancing the mission and leadership of the College of Fellows and its grant funding activities. \nMapping a career around AIA Fellowship provides a path to positively impact others and elevate the value\, potential and reach of the many career paths architects take. Attendees will gain inspiration on finding time for introspection\, planning and preparation to explore\, define and elevate meaning in practice. \nLearning Objectives \n\nGain detailed understanding of AIA Fellowship & the process of submission.\nLearn about the value of AIA Fellowship for the advancement of individuals and their work.\nAcquire skills to develop storylines and narratives to capture career milestones and projects.\nTake-away resources on story structure and guidelines for better professional writing
