Virginia Design Forum X: SKINS

Consider architectural skin as it relates to boundary, structure, and the social implications inherent in the envelope’s solution. Is it still true that the origin of architecture lies in the making of walls? What are the boundaries of architecture today? How are new computer technologies, new materials, new social behaviors changing the perception of architecture? What is the relationship between the making of the skin and its functional and social roles? Can we please open a window without undermining an energy model?  As architecture functions more as a synthetic biological organism working in conjunction with the surrounding ecosystem, can more literal comparisons be made between human skin and the built skin. If both natural and the building skin communicate emotional and physical states, what can biology teach the architect?

Historic Resources Committee Tour: Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest

The VSAIA Historic Resources Committee’s first activity of 2012 is a visit to Thomas Jefferson’s retreat Poplar Forest.

Part architectural masterpiece, part engineering marvel and part work of art. Poplar Forest is more than Thomas Jefferson’s personal retreat.  It is the living embodiment of Jefferson’s genius: blending landscape and architecture, the first octagonal home in America is one of only two homes he designed and built for his own use.  Poplar Forest is a National Historic Landmark and a U.S. candidate for nomination as a World Heritage Site.

Sold after his death, altered and fallen into disrepair, Poplar Forest is today being restored. It is emerging as a stunning environment where architecture and landscape are seamlessly intertwined. The study of Poplar Forest is shedding new light on Thomas Jefferson, his creativity, his curiosity and his private world.

Travis McDonald, Poplar Forest’s Director of Architectural Restoration is our host for this visit.  We will visit the house and grounds, and discuss the ongoing restoration.

The group will meet at Poplar Forest at 10:30 am on Wednesday April 4.

There is no charge for this tour, but registration is requested.  AIA/CES Continuing Education Hours (CEHs) will be provided for this activity.

2009 IBC Solving Means of Egress in Commercial Buildings Code Seminar

The 2009 IBC® Solving Means of Egress in Commercial Buildings seminar provides participants with the requirements for means of egress. Plans for a 4-story commercial building are provided to allow participants the opportunity to practice problem solving related to each egress issue.

Objectives:

Upon completion of this seminar, participants will be better able to:

HRC Tour: Dovetail Construction and 2710 Monument Avenue

The VSAIA Historic Resources Committee presents a special two-part tour:

Dovetail Construction Offices and 2710 Monument Avenue

Wednesday June 13

Dovetail Construction renovated a former electric railway car barn originally built in 1907 in the heart of Richmond for their offices.  The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, certified LEED platinum, and a net zero energy commercial office

Dovetail took what was arguably one of the least efficient buildings in Virginia and made it into one of the most efficient — all in an enterprise zone that really needed some tender loving alternative energy.

More about the building:

http://www.dovetailinc.com/wherewework.html

On June 13 we will combine a visit to the Dovetail offices with a tour of 2710 Monument Avenue.  The 1914 mansion is owned by the owners of Dovetail Construction, and at present is undergoing a significant renovation and restoration.  The owners, Paul and Julie Weissend, are writing a blog about the process.  From the blog:

This is the story of a very special house that has seen a lot of changes since it was built in 1914.  Our company, Dovetail Construction, has been in the business of high performance and sustainable renovation since 1987.  The scope of the renovation is in fact “monumental” and it actually sits on the renowned Monument Avenue in Richmond, VA.  The house was originally built for William Schwarzchild and designed by the architect D. Wiley Anderson.  It went from being a single family residence to the home of the Senior Center of Richmond thanks to the hard work from the ladies of the Junior League of Richmond.  As progress is made to take the house back to its original use as a single family home, we are fortifying it with the best resources, and technology available to make it last at least another 100 years.

Times and other details TBD.  Register below and we will keep you apprised as things are finalized.
